Dear Friends,
By now, I'm sure you've heard of the cruel and absolutely unnecessary destruction of the Red-tailed Hawks Pale Male and Lola's nest on 5th Avenue in NYC. As many of you know, this was a nest that was years in the making and has supported many offspring in past years, including 3 chicks in the spring of 2004. Since a construction crew came through on Tuesday, the nest is gone and Pale Male and Lola are now seen bringing fresh branches to the hard surface where their nest once was securely anchored by spikes originally intended to keep pigeons away. Hard as the Red-tailed Hawks try, they can not rebuild their nest because there is nothing left to anchor the branches. The contractors dismantled the spikes.
Pale Male is a gift from nature to all of us. He has given joy and hope to thousands of fans in NY and all around the country for the past decade. It would be a real shame to chase him out of our lives. I believe we must fight for him and for what he represents.
The NY Audubon Society is trying to help. If you log onto www.nycaudubon.org you can get information on politicians' phone numbers to call, along with an urgent plea from Audubon. They have set up a site where you can "sign" a petition by replying with your email. That address is: http://ny.audubon.org/pale_male.htm
Other information can be found at: www.palemale.com
What did these magnificent, and now homeless, birds ever do to deserve the tearing down of their home? Together, hopefully we can bring enough pressure to where the spikes will be put back into place, and the birds can start rebuilding a new nest before mating (as soon as January) and egg laying season starts.
Please pass the above web site information to your friends. It's going to take a loud voice to reverse this inhumane and cruel act.
Thank you.
Frederic
