USING TIMBER CERTIFICATION AS A TOOL FOR WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT: EXPERIENCES FROM WEST AND CENTRAL AFRICA

This event is in addition to the published annual programme of ZSL Science and Conservation Events. We hope you will be able to attend the above special event in the Wildlife Conservation series at 6.30pm on Tuesday 30 March 2010. Doors will be open from 6.00pm on the evening and seats will be on a first-come, first-served basis; please arrive early to ensure you get a good seat.

Conservation efforts often focus on protected areas as refuges for conserving biodiversity. However, these areas represent less than 10% of remaining forest in Africa and are often too small or fragmented to protect rare or wide-ranging species.

At the same time, around a third of Africa’s forests are now allocated to the exploitation of timber and therefore the survival of many emblematic species, such as gorilla, chimpanzee and forest elephant, as well as other wildlife, will depend on their successful management within these timber concessions.

Increased consumer demand has led to the development of schemes to certify that timber comes from sustainably managed forests. Do timber certification schemes provide the key to securing a future for wildlife in the working forests of tropical Africa? Examples of efforts to improve wildlife management in logging concessions will be given and the role that timber certification schemes might play in ensuring the implementation of best management practice discussed.

Speakers to include:
Fonvinyuh Gordian Fanso
, Forest Stewardship Council;
Justice Eshun,
Samartex Timber and Plywood Company Ltd;
Dr Eric Arnhem
, ZSL Wildlife Wood Project - Cameroon; and
Dr Nico Dauphiné

Your current web browser must be updated to version 7 of Internet Explorer (IE7) to take advantage of all of template's capabilities.

Why should I upgrade to Internet Explorer 7? Microsoft has redesigned Internet Explorer from the ground up, with better security, new capabilities, and a whole new interface. Many changes resulted from the feedback of millions of users who tested prerelease versions of the new browser. The most compelling reason to upgrade is the improved security. The Internet of today is not the Internet of five years ago. There are dangers that simply didn't exist back in 2001, when Internet Explorer 6 was released to the world. Internet Explorer 7 makes surfing the web fundamentally safer by offering greater protection against viruses, spyware, and other online risks.

Get free downloads for Internet Explorer 7, including recommended updates as they become available. To download Internet Explorer 7 in the language of your choice, please visit the Internet Explorer 7 worldwide page.
